2024 Grateful 34: Be proud, be sound, behave

Passing through Glengariff in Co. Cork recently, we stopped for a gander before heading over Healy Pass into Co. Kerry. Wandering through the very colourful village, the launching point for boat trips to the tropical gardens on Garnish Island, I spotted this sign.

I laughed out loud as I read it, thankful for the wit that is so uniquely Cork.

Green sign with white writing decreasing in size: This place is for YOU. It's for your friends, your mam and dad, your nana and granda. It's for your uncle mike and aunt mary who are fierce fond of the old spice beef sambos. This place is for your dog and the dog across the road with the annoying bark. This place is for that fellah up the road who pretends he hates the Frank and Walters but everyone knows he's an awful spoofer and his daughter, she always comes down here. You know the one with the red and white coat who's always drinking tanora. This place is for all the smallies who go to your old primary and then they go mental legging it around the playground. And don't forget Jimmy. The lad who absolutley bates the gel into his hair. He's pure septic altogether but he has to show off somewhere. This place is for the wildlife so don't take all the cessies coz they'll have nothing to eat like. YThis place is for everyone. It's Co. Cork like. There's no other place like it in the world. So be proud of it. Be sound and look after it. Nice one lads. Three circles follow with two stick figures in each - one says BE PROUD. the BE SOUND. then BEHAVE Under Be Proud - Don't wreck the place, help us to protect our environment and the beauty of our county. Under BE SOUND - Be considerate of fellow visitors and our teams and community partners who work hard to keep this area beautiful. BEHAVE - have the craic but act responsibly. This place is here for everyone to enjoy.

How colourful life would be if we were more creative in our signposting. This gets my vote for the best anti-litter sign. Ever.

In case you’re wondering, Tanora is a tangerine, carbonated drink sold in Ireland, predominantly in Munster. It was introduced by John Daly & Co, a mineral water bottler in Cork City and is now under the Coca-Cola brand umbrella.

If you’ve any trouble with the rest of it, ask away!

I have a vague notion I visited Garnish Island many lifetimes ago and next time I’m in the vicinity with time on my hands, I will make the journey.

The gardens of Garinish (also known as Garnish, or Ilnacullin) owe their existence to the creative partnership, some eighty years ago, of Annan and Violet Bryce, then owners of the island, and Harold Peto, acclaimed architect and garden designer. The island is renowned for its richness of plant form and colour, which change continuously with the seasons. Pathways wind around the landscape, leading to a number of fascinating garden buildings, such as the Grecian temple, the clock tower, the casita, and an original Martello Tower. Bryce House, the family residence on the island for many years, is presented as it would have appeared during their lifetime. A selection from their vast collection of important paintings, prints, drawings, and books can be seen on display inside.

  1. Oh, yes. It’s not avoiding carbs that keeps us young. It’s ‘Finding fun where fun is to be found.’

I love the sign. Do they sell copies to tourists? I’d like one!
